Abstract

During the late 19th century, a series of scientific and popular journals emerged in the United States. Their pages frequently featured reports on archaeological excavations conducted and sponsored by universities, institutions, and societies established in the aftermath of the American Civil War. These reports pertained not only to archaeology but also to history, classical philology, and travel writing.

This growing interest in the ancient cultures of Greece and Rome remained exclusively reserved for socioeconomic elites who, by virtue of their education, held prominent positions in universities, museums, and scientific institutions.
