La evaluación de las revistas científicas ha sido objeto de intenso debate desde que Eugene Garfield introdujo el concepto del Factor de Impacto (FI) en 1955 [1]. Aunque la implementación práctica del FI no fue inmediata, su desarrollo estuvo fuertemente vinculado a la creación del Science Citation Index (SCI) en 1964 el cual fue desarrollado por el Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) bajo el liderazgo de Garfield, con lo que revolucionó la forma en que se analizaba la literatura científica.
