Introduction: vitamin B 12 deficiency is a clinical condition with multiple causes. Its main clinical manifestations are hematological and neuropsychiatric.
Objectives: to establish the sociodemographic characteristics and the prevalence of etiological factors for vitamin B 12 deficiency in a population of Palmira, Colombia.
Materials and methods. A retrospective cross-sectional study was developed in a tertiary referral center in Palmira, Colombia. The study period was from March 1, 2020, to March 1, 2023. Electronic medical records were reviewed to obtain information on patients' clinical characteristics, comorbidities, and laboratory tests.
Results and conclusions. Vitamin B 12 deficiency mainly affects the adult population and the elderly. Among the etiological factors, autoimmune diseases (mainly primary hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's thyroiditis) and the consumption of some medications such as metformin and proton pump inhibitors stood out with greater prevalence.
